Why? Almost 3 billion people in the world live thanks to farmer agriculture, fishing, livestock farming, fruit picking and hunting. However, amongst the billion people who suffer from hunger, almost two thirds are farmers and their families.
This is a real paradox, as these people are in direct contact with agricultural production. Farmer agriculture is not able to properly feed these families, mainly and foremost because these people are poor.
SOS Faim calls out to Belgian and European authorities about policies having a negative impact on Southern producers living on farmer agriculture. Agricultural, commercial and development policies, often dictated by international institutions, do not respect the food sovereignty of states and populations. They give priority to agro business and put into competition farmers whose production conditions are not equal.
Our campaigns always take over the proposals of our Southern partners for a better consideration of farmer agriculture and food sovereignty. We defend their interests by Belgian and European authorities.
At the same time, we raise awareness and mobilize a larger audience during various events, so that more and more citizens defend the positions of Southern rural actors and that their proposals are taken into account at a political level.
We fight alongside a network of supporters and volunteers. In order to have more impact, we regularly work in network with other farmer associations and organisations, as it has been the case during the food sovereignty platform. SOS Faim is also a member of the National Centre for Cooperation and Development.
