Cameroon : The ACDIC
An unacceptable situation. As early as 1995, Cameroon
witnesses an explosion in the importation of frozen chickens from Europe,
Asia and Latin America. They are sold at very low prices on local markets
in disastrous sanitary conditions. As of 2001, the situation becomes catastrophic:
chicken raisers can no longer market their products and go broke. SAILD
(Service in support of local development initiatives) had long encouraged
peasants to enter the chicken raising business, then very profitable.
It
creates the ACDIC to campaign against the importation of frozen chickens
with the support of SOS Faim.
A public serving project. In order to regulate the importations and to relaunch the local production as well as all associated trades (pluckers, transporters, merchants, feed traders) the ACDIC campaigns. In Cameroon and in Europe for the importation problems are closely linked to European politics.
Results are there. In Cameroon the population is awoke to the problems and wants to press the politicians to act. In Europe, volunteers are mobilized and collect over 65000 signatures in favor of a rewriting of the WTC rules.
A productive campaign. Importation quotas have been set
up and frozen chickens are heretofore taxed which makes them more expensive
that locally raised chickens. The ACDIC supports peasants in the re-launching
of the local chicken market.
Besides, this association is increasingly involved in the provinces through
a decentralized structure. Starting in 2006 it plans a new campaign in
favor of alimentary security: tomatoes, rice, cereals. There are plenty
of opportunities to fight.
We need you to carry on. To enable ACDIC to carry out successfully its mission towards creating awareness and having the rules changed, we need for this year: Euros 100.000.
