Congo Kinshasa : Context
Lack of security. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), more than 85% of the population live in rural areas and agriculture often is the main source of a family’s income. Unfortunately the succession of wars and other military conflicts, subsequent looting, theft and insecurity forced populations to move around. Farming became more and more difficult and poverty kept growing, which makes precarious living conditions of the population even worse. Those who have not fled to neighbouring countries, try to survive in agriculture, fishing or as craftsmen… very often forming informal groups to fight impending dangers together. Alas, despite their courage and determination, these groups have to face a greater challenge which is the lack of money which would allow them to develop their activities. Banks have closed or have severely reduced their activities, microfinance institutions hardly exist.
