Niger: Fugn-Mooriben
A programme of rural communication. FUGN-MOORIBEN
is a group of 15 producer unions, the majority of which are operating in
thenDosso and Tillabéry region.. Its mission is to support its members
economically and to help build a strong farmers movement in Niger. FUGN-MOORIBEN
cuurently has about 20 000 members. FUGN-MOORIBEN’ develops
a multitude of activities: professional training and elementary teaching,
creation of savings and credit banks, supply of farm products,
organization
of cereal banks, awareness campaigns on rural radio stations, lobbying
with authorities.
SOS Faim has been supporting a rural communications programme in favour of FUGN-MOORIBEN members since January 2005.
This programme’s objectives are:
- to improve access to information for members of the farmers’ organizations in a local language and in a number of different fields (savings and loans, health care, education, life of an organization..) ;
- to improve the services offered by the federation to its members;
- to improve cooperation and internal democracy within the federation..
Union members actively participate in the development of radio programmes and other events. 11 local radio stations are part of the programme. Technical management is looked after.
In the midst of the food crisis striking Niger in 2005, SOS Faim, exceptionally supported a programme of emergency assistance of the farmer’s federation, through a contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (25 000 €).
Financing: The SOS Faim Luxembourg support to the rural communications programme of FUGN-MOORIBEN amounts to 151 408 € (2005-2006).
