Senegal : FATICK
An unacceptable situation. SOS Faim, in cooperation with
Gerad, a Sénégalese research and management consultancy,
decided in 1999 to assist the FATICK a sahelian
region
south of Dakar, one of the poorest areas of Sénégal.
In fact, this region has the lowest average family income of the country and its poverty rate runs 50% higher. Besides, it gets little assistance from international cooperation programs. Rural exodus plagues this region as men leave their villages during the dry season with the hope of finding work in the towns, often in vain. To act was therefore an urgent challenge.
People serving projects. The FATICK integrated development program has for objectives:
- To support of activities with a decent income level particularly for women.
- To strengthen organizations representing the peasants in order to better defend the latter’s interests.
- To incite various local actors, among which the regional authorities, to collaborate towards the region’s development.
Microcredits and marketing bring results. SOS Faim within this framework collaborates with different partners:
- 10 local associations consisting of over 138 women promotion groups. These partners through microcredit help women undertake commercial activities, small scale cattle breeding, or artisanal trades. They also defend their interest with local authorities.
- The federation of cashew nuts growers that we have assisted in marketing their products.
- The savings and credit group of Foundiougne, a microcredit establishment that enables peasants and their families do undertake new activities (selling on local markets) or to purchase equipment, seeds or oxen.
We need your help to carry on. Today, this programme assists directly about 5000 families.
To carry on we need this year Euros….
